[Talk Hip-Hop] Drake Releases Mixtapes w/o Releasing Mixtapes

/

Drake Side

That may seem a bit confusing right? Well, allow me to explain. By now you should have heard Drake latest 3 songs that he released yesterday (if not check them out here). If you remember, this is not the first time the Young Money / OVO frontman released a record without any talk, promo or “intent”. That brings me to the theory that was mentioned; Drake releases mixtapes without releasing mixtapes.

Since the days of Comeback Season, So Far Gone and for those super fans out there, Room for Improvement; Drake hasn’t released a mixtape in typical fashion. However, what he has figured out is somewhat phenomenal. Hear me out for a second. What does a mixtape really suppose to do? Grab your attention. Build some buzz around the artist. If you are lucky, then you may even get some extreme radio play. Well lets see, Drizzy has hit that mark every time. It happened first when he joined Migos on “Versace” (you know, the record that has everyone in rap sounding alike now). Then he did it again a couple of months later with the Soulja Boy assisted “We Made It”. The third time proved to be a charm with the Hit-Boy produced “Trophies” and don’t forget about “Draft Day” and “0 to 100 / The Catch Up“.

Drake manages to grab your attention with one record that just so happens to release in the middle of night and then all of a sudden it’s the next best thing. The question is, how does he do it? Is it the machine behind him, is it his personality, who knows? One thing is for certain, though, dude makes records that we all gravitate toward…even if it’s not attached to an album or mixtape. What I want to know for our Talk Hip-Hop series is why? Sound off in the comment section.
